A friend of mine invited my daughter and I over to her house for a beautiful Spring BBQ. Because we are vegan and her family is not I, of course, brought some fresh veg and a couple of rice patties to grill. I had just bought a beautiful organic fennel and decided to bring it along and figure out what to do with it once I was there. So I brought along just a bunch of veg I had in the fridge. When I got there her and I began chopping and preparing everything (honestly she did more than me, my rice patties were already done and cutting fennel in quarters isn’t much work). I just love making things up on the fly and using whatever is around not relying just on what I have in my cupboards. I thought a nice salad sounded nice so here’s what I came up with…
- 1 fennel bulb
- 1 lg tomato
- 1 English cucumber
Vinegrette
- 1/2 cup oil (vegetable is what was on hand)
- 1/2 cup vinegar (white is what she had)
- 1/4 water
- salt & pepper to taste
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
First get out a large bowl. Chop tomato and cucumber place into bowl. I cut the fennel into quarters and grilled two parts or half and chopped the other half and added to the salad. Once the fennel is grilled to your liking chop it as well and add to salad.
For the vinaigrette
I didn’t have my jar with the lid so I just used a sippy cup of hers poured all the ingredients in put my finger over the holes and shook. I then poured about 1 to 2 tablespoons over the salad and served.
Her and I both thought it turned out really yummy! I hope you’ll try it and let me know what you think!

Hi Brittani,
So I was looking at your blog site and saw your favorite deodorant recipe, just baking soda and lotion. I have to ask: does it last all day?
I’ve been toying around with different ones and keep finding that unless i apply it and then let it “soak in” before I get dressed, often it will end up quitting working. I wonder if this would work better? Any thoughts? I’ve been using one lately from Super Supplements, one of the closer-to-natural ones I guess, but I’d like something that WORKS and doesn’t wear off halfway thru my workday (and I sit at a desk…so it’s not like I’m working out or anything…)
I also forwarded your blog link to a friend who is vegan, as I saw you had some vegan recipes there. I thought she might enjoy trying new food
Thanks!
~Brittany~
Miss Brittani’s Response
I think that since it’s getting warmer here I will be experimenting more. I put it on right before I do yoga or go for a hike and don’t seem to have any issues with smell. One thing to note is that with these recipes they are not an antiperspirant so you will sweat you just won’t stink! I have another one on there
http://mbnaturalliving.com/?p=53 I would encourage you to try them and see if you are happy with the results.
Thank you so much for forwarding my blog to your friend. All of my recipes are vegan!
I think your concern will hit home with a lot of my readers.
Thank you,
~Miss Brittani
I also commented on your blog about compassion in world farming. I do eat meat, and that’s why I intend to buy land (hopefully soon!) where I can raise my own chickens. I get into my reasons on the comment and I hope that people who follow your blog, can learn something from my posting about how to tell whether a whole chicken they just bought, is healthy or not.
I am fine with deodorants rather than antiperspirants. Our bodies are meant to sweat! I tend to have a very narrow temperature window so I tend to sweat – I just don’t want to stink while I do it!
Thanks! I keep finding new cool stuff on your site. Will have to browse more

Miss Brittani’s Response
I just read and approved your comment and was about to respond. I think it’s important for those who do eat meat to know how to tell if what they are eating is healthy. That’s why I wrote that article. I don’t feel it is my job to preach to people, judge nor convert them. I simply give information and allow others to make their own decisions.
Yes, we are supposed to sweat! Not everyone knows this. I know what you mean and feel the same way. My recipes have kept me from stinking and I sweat a lot!
I hope you keep browsing and keep giving me feedback.

Right now you are probably thinking I’m nuts! Perhaps I am. I am very concious about how much power I use but after visisting my parents (in the middle of no where Alberta, Canada) I thought it would be nice to see how well we could do. My plan is to for one week this spring, not use any electricity. Because I live in the city I will be using water for bathing and clothes washing but other thatn that nothing else. We will eat raw or use the BBQ outside. Right now where I live it’s light from around 5:30 am to 9 pm.
I will keep a journal of our progress but will only post once the week is over. I have not yet pciked a date. I will lt you all know when I do or I will put up a poll to let you guys choose.

On vacation I had to improvise. I ran out of my homemade deodorant and didn’t want to use store bought so I came up with this one.
- 2 tbls baking soda
- 2 tsp lotion (whatever is your fav!)
Just mix these two together into a small container and store in a dark cool place. It’s ver moisturizing. And if you make your own lotion you can play with the scents!

Visiting up here in the frozen North you want some food with substance to keep you warm so here is what I came up with on my night to cook…
- 1 lbs noodles (swirls)
- 1 lg onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1 carrot
- 2 cups mushrooms (any kind is fine)
- 3 tbls flour
- 3 tbls olive oil
- 4 med red potatoes
- 1 tsp sea salt
- fresh ground pepper
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- 2 tsp tarragon
- sprinkle sage
- 4 cups noodle water
Preheat oven to 400F. In a large pot boil the water for the pasta, don’t forget to salt when it comes to a boil and add pasta. Get out a large sauce pan pour in oil and place over medium heat. While the pan is heating up chop the onion, the pan should be nice and hot by the time you are done so add onion immediately. Add the salt. Stir. While you are sauteeing the onion peel and finely chop the carrot. Once the oinion is soft and slightly brown add the carrot and chop the mushroom and garlic, add once chopped. Chop the potatoes in half then slice like you are making scalloped potatoes, put in a pot of boiling water. Add the frozen peas. Add all the spices, stirring together until the carrots are cooked but still crisp. Add the flour, stir thouroughly until flour has cooked a bit. I use a ladle to pour the water from the noodles into the veg mix and stir. This is your sauce so add enough to make it a sauce but not too watery, about four cups should be good jsut keep a good eye on it and stir constantly. Turn off heat. Drain noodles and potatoes. Get out your casserole pan and add a layer of noodles followed by a layer of sauce and then a layer of potatoes. continue until you are out of ingredients. Bake for 40 min or until golden on top.

So I am still up in Canada . It really is lovely although someone forgot to tell the weather it is supposed to be getting warmer! Where I am is mostly farm land and still completely covered in snow and ice. My first week it was -40 C, let me just say that after -20 Celsius or Fahrenheit doesn’t matter it’s just cold. I ended up having to buy more winter clothes for the kiddo and I so we could keep our toes attached.
The other day we went out to visit some of my mother’s friends, my mother, daughter and myself, while we were on Martha’s farm another farmer friend of her’s showed up and we were chatting when he invited us to take a sleigh ride at his farm that afternoon. It was turning out to be a gorgeous day. The sun had just started coming out and the temperature got all the way up to 34F, quite warm comparatively. So we hurried home ate lunch, jumped in the truck and off we went down the driveway! We picked up Martha(mom’s friend) on the way and pulled into the next farm. They (Randy and Helen) had two gorgeous draft horses attached to a wooden sleigh with four hay bales in the center.
We all hopped on and away we went! It was rather amusing to hear comments about how well “the city girl” did with all this farm stuff. In the city where I live I tend to be a bit on the natural side of things and in the country I’m too city, ah well you’ve just got to laugh!
Their farm was beautiful, still covered in snow, and some of the friendliest people you could ever want to meet. We rode through the empty part of the farm first then Helen asked if we would like to see the cows. I, of course, said yes not realizing we were going straight into the cow herd. Not that I am some kind of cow expert but I think these cows were giant, they were almost the size of the horses. She pulled the sleigh into the middle of the cow field were they all surrounded us and then started stealing our seats(the hay bales)! Martha jumped down and rescued them and we all had a good laugh.
When we came back to the front of the farm Randy unhitched the horses and we got to pet them. My mom was standing toward the back and said “thank for the ride ladies” to the horses and one turned, looked at my mother and nodded her head. Perhaps it was just coincidence but we were sure impressed!
We had a great time. They jokingly said next time maybe I could even milk the cows!

We often get caught up in the hype from the media telling us we need this or that. We see flashy images on the television computer screen or even magazines and newspapers all making tons of things we don’t need sound and look so very appealing. I would like to share some of my ideas that cost very little or nothing at all as you likely have all these items just laying around the house.
For cleaning around the house use rags made from old shirts, towels, and pants (not so much jeans). You can wash them and keep reusing.
I also like to take my favorite outfits my daughter has grown out of, cut then into shapes and make a quilt for her room. It’s a wonderful way to keep the memories but in a useful way!
As children grow the waist often still fits but the pants become too short I rip open the seams add some materiel and make it into a skirt. If you have a boy you could do a hem and make some shorts.
I take my used green and white tea and put them in a bowl and place them in my refrigerator. It keeps the smell down much like baking soda but better in my opinion. Besides I use my baking soda for so many other things!
I will continue to update this post as I think of more. If you have any great tips send them in and I’ll post them here!

Last night here at my parents my mother and I were discussing what to eat so I went online to a vegan recipe site and began browsing. I saw a stroganoff recipe but we didn’t have much of what was on there so I did what I always do and made up my own, It turned out yummy so I thought I’d share with all of you. You just need…
- 1 lb bag of noodles ( I used swirls but whatever you have will work fine)
- 2 tbls olive oil
- 1 onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 cup fresh mushrooms (any kind will work)
- 2 tbls flour
- 2 1/2 cups water
- 1 block soft tofu
- 1 tsp coriander
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tbls green onion
Take a big pot for the noodles fill with water and wait for it to boil. While the water is warming up chop the onion, garlic and mushrooms. Put a large sauce pan on medium heat when the oil is hot add the onion, always add a dash of salt to absorb the moisture from the onions. Allow onions to caramelize, takes about 15 min, then add the mushrooms when they have softened add the garlic. Like to add more salt, pepper and the coriander here, then add the flour and allow to mix well and slowly add the water while stirring constantly. In a food processor, blender or by hand mix the soft tofu and add a sprinkle of salt and pepper set aside. The sauce should look brown from the caramelized onions and mushrooms. Drain pasta put back in pot. Turn off heat to sauce add tofu stir well and add to noodles. top with copped green onion and serve.

Recently I was on an organic, natural mom board when I happened across a post named “no-poo”. I must admit at first my reaction was to keep browsing but decided to click on it see what it was about. I had the idea that it was something to do with diapering but I could not have been further off. This wan an article about shampoo or more accurately, to poo or not to poo that is the question.
The blog I was reading this blog that explains rather thoroughly how to go about the “no-poo” process. Apparently this idea is not new but has been around for years. The funny thing to me is that I have been using this method for sometime. I was not aware it had such a funny name or even that there was a name given. I had simply been calling hair cleansing.
In her blog post she goes on to explain the wonders of coconut oil. I am a big fan of coconut oil as many of my readers are well aware.
Another blog I have come to appreciate is nature mom she explains the reasons not to use shampoo which are mine as well. She gives us a run down of the ingredients and makes it easy to understand.
In the end regardless of what you call it it’s all the same out come for the same reasons.
